♥ Looks like it's that time again! ♥
And let's just say I wanna get my foot in the door for this year's Global Hetalia Day, which if I remember right, falls on Sunday October 24th this year. Pretty much, neurotic_banana
and I are trying to re-organize everything and review last year's event so that we can plan a few things more efficiently and make sure everybody has a blast for a second year in a row.
We've found a better location -- Balboa Park in Van Nuys, CA -- where the regular visitors and rangers actually enjoy it when cosplayers come to play! We're working on getting all the park security issues out of the way well in advance to avoid last year's little incident with the props AND we're working towards implementing a brand new, state of the art Peace Bonding Station!
We also have a newer, more efficient updated set of the rules for this event, since we got into some trouble last time. I wanna make sure we'll be able to come back again in 2011 and have just as much fun for years and years to come, so in a way, we're a bit stricter because we want to be absolutely PERFECT this year. Please make sure to read and review the Hetalia Day in L.A. Code of Conduct
for this event and stay tuned for updates. When the official organizational thread is posted we will link to it here. ;3
This thread is also for recruiting committee members, but we also want to show you a sneak peek of what we have planned this time around! Feel free to post any suggestions, requests, questions, concerns, comments or even fan mail (just kidding!) in the comments section and we'll be happy to talk to you. <3
Hetalia Day in L.A. Code of Conduct
It is CRUCIAL that everyone attending this event reads and understands these rules. If anything is unclear, you are most welcome to ask for us to clarify. Some of these issues are outlined in the FAQ section below too, so please read them.
Weapons: We know you guys love your weapon replicas, but due to an issue we had last year, we'd like for you to leave them at home until further notice. We may come up with a few compromises, seeing as how Balboa Park seems to be much more tolerant than that of Griffith Park, and are used to cosplay events. If the park gives us the green light, we plan to set up a Peace Bonding Station, as mentioned above. When you arrive at the gathering site, please check your weapon in to be Peace Bonded by a volunteer. Keep in mind the usual weapons policies that most cons and large gatherings have. That means orange tips on the guns, and in the case of Sirsoft or cap guns, please DO NOT bring the ammo and DO NOT fire them. Mock fighting is also strictly prohibited. For swords and knives, NO LIVE STEEL. This also applies to the characteristic lead pipe carried by Russia and any other weaponry that would be made of metal (ex: wrenches, hammers, other tools, crowbars, signposts, etc...) If you fail to comply with this regulation, we will ask you to please leave your weapon prop in your car. Should there be an incident in which this rule is ignored altogether, you will be given one warning before you are asked to leave the event. This
FLAGS: This is a BIG issue. Last year we noticed the poor treatment of some of the flags people brought along as props. Bear in mind that the flag you carry as a prop is also the symbol of a country and must be treated with respect. You are allowed to bring a flag with you so long as you take care of it properly. We cannot stress this enough! If you bring a flag, please keep it on a flagpole or fold it neatly and place it in a bag when you are not using it for photos. DO NOT SIT ON THEM OR LEAVE THEM ON THE GROUND. Please have respect for the nation whose flag represents.
- BEAHVIOR AND COMMON COURTESY
GESTURES: Certain gestures and sayings may have a deep negative connotation and should NEVER been taken lightly. Keep your surroundings in mind. For example, if we see a Germany or Prussia cosplayer in a “Sieg Heil” or doing any such gesture, organizers will give you a warning. If you continue this behaviour, we have the right to ask you to leave the gathering. We don't care if it's meant as a joke. Bottom line, it is inappropriate and neither the time or place. What you do at home in private is your own business, but we will not tolerate it at this gathering. On that same note, please refrain from wearing Nazi or even Red Army attire at the park. It is a public place where people other than cosplayers will see you.
HARASSMENT: Unfortunately, this topic has come up several times. I really shouldn't have to tell you to keep your hands to yourself, but... KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF. My co-organizer and I keep hearing about Prussia and France cosplayers that get wayyyy too grabby handed with other cosplayers, and frankly, that disturbs me. Unless you know the person and they are completely okay with it, you should NEVER touch a fellow cosplayer in an inappropriate manner. I don't care how in-character you think it may be. It's also in-character for Russia to be yandere and bludgen people with his pipe, or Hungary to hit people with her frying pan, but you don't see those cosplayers actually doing that, do you? If our volunteers see any of that going on and the harassed cosplayer feels distressed, you will be asked to leave, no questions asked. ESPECIALLY if said "victim" is a minor. Bad Touch Trio be damned, I don't want to see any bad touching. DX
RESPECT: Please respect the other park attendees. Some people will naturally be curious and ask what you're up to, so don't be rude to them. Also, I really don't want to see a huge group of cosplayers in the playground. If there are a lot of kids playing there, let them play in peace. Some kids tend to be rude as well and will make snide remarks about your costumes. You may want to avoid that. I honestly don't need to see a grown person arguing with a seven year old. =_=;
- GENERAL ISSUES TO KEEP IN MIND
CLEAN UP YOUR TRASH: Last year a handful of people had to stay behind and clean up after everyone who'd left garbage and plastic wrappers and remnants of food behind at the picnic area, and even I had to leave earlier than that group because my ride to the park had a previous engagement and we got him in trouble because he was late. I would also like to point out that littering is against the law and making other attendees of the gathering clean up YOUR mess is really uncool. I'd like it if people could take initiative and pick up trash they see lying around even if it's not theirs. I get so frustrated when I ask for help cleaning up and somebody has the bright idea to say, "Well I'm tired and that's not mine anyway." and I'm pretty sure you'd feel the same if you were in my shoes. In order to ensure that the park staff feel comfortable with us returning next year and the year after and for as many years as we feel like doing this again and again, I cannot stress enough how important it is that you keep our area clean!
PARENTS AND NON-FANDOM INDIVIDUALS: Hetalia has fans of all ages, so I'm fairly certain some of our younger fans will join us for the day. I have quite a few high school aged friends and acquaintances due to the nature of anime and cosplay, and I know that their parents are VERY concerned about safety at events. There is also a high likelihood that "normal people" will ask us what we're up to. Rather than being rude to them, here are a few suggestions for attendees that easily soothe the worried parental unit and spark the interest of the average Normie.
- Encourage your parents to come along! - Even in other fandoms, we love it when the parent of a fan seems interested. I've even managed to get my own mother, who normally feels rather indifferent toward anime in general, to develop a soft spot for Russia-tan because he's part of my family's heritage. Heritage is a really good conversation starter for older fans, so if you're well-informed of your family tree, definitely play that up!
- Have a positive attitude! - Smiles go for miles, so if a little kid says something to you, smile. If people cheer and wave and holler because they like your gigantic Spanish flag, smile and wave back. If someone asks what kind of party we're throwing, tell them we're celebrating World Peace! After all, when the whole world comes together for something as amazing as Hetalia Day, there's no way you can get away with being sad for too long.
- Have fun! - This is the most important guideline of all. We're here to have fun, and if you're not having fun people will notice. Have a good time, make new friends and talk about the fandom. We're all friends here. <3
-----Hetalia Day in L.A. Frequently Asked Questions Question: Where Can I Find The Information On Hetalia Day in L.A. For This Year's Event?Answer: Our planning thread is on cosplay.com and all of the information is in the very first post! Here's the link: http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=213023 The answers to all of the questions in this FAQ can be found in the first post, by the way.
Question: What Day is Hetalia Day on?
Answer: Hetalia day coincides with United Nations Day on your average calendar and falls on the same day every year, which is October 24th.
Question: What if Hetalia Day is on a weekday next time?
Answer: That is something that will be decided by the Hetalia Day community as a whole, I would assume. I do not know the answer to that question because I am not part of the main site's staff.Question: Can I enter the cosplay contest?Answer: Our cosplay contest is called the Miss Hetalia Day Pageant and is open to contestants of all ages and genders and nationalities! As long as you are present for the contest and have a Halloween-themed costume, you are eligible to duke it out with the other ghosts, goblins and things that go 'Pastaaaaaaa~!' in the night.
Question: Where is Hetalia Day in L.A. this year?
Answer: The answer to that question is at the VERY TOP of the cosplay.com thread. Please refer to that post for any and all information concerning the location, time and date of this particular Hetalia Day event from this point forward.
Question: Can I email the staff to ask questions about the time, date or location of Hetalia Day in L.A.?
Answer: No. You CAN ask us about activities that will take place at the event or how to Volunteer with us
Question: How old must I be to volunteer?
Answer: If you are aged 16 and up, you can Volunteer with us. Please send an email if you would like to learn more about the sections we have available for volunteering.
Question: Can I bring snacks to share with everybody?
Answer: Yes, you are actually encouraged to bring food to this event because it is also a picnic! Sharing is caring, so as long as you clean up your litter you're good to go!
Question: If I am allergic to certain types of food, what should I do?
Answer: If you are allergic to something that can be found in food one would bring to a picnic, please send us an email so we can make sure there's a snack for you, too. I don't think that'll be TOO huge a deal, but just to be on the safe side, anyone bringing snacks that have peanuts in them, eggs, milk, wheat or other common food allergies might want to let us know about it in their sign up post.
Question: How many people can participate in the Miss Hetalia Day Pageant?Answer: We ran out of time last year and people kept jumping in line without signing up, so this year, contestants will have a limited number of 30 participants ONLY and will wear a special colored wristband. If the wristband is lost or stolen, we cannot replace it, so make sure you hang onto it.
Question: Does this event have a theme?Answer: Yes! Hetalia Day in L.A. is Halloween-themed because it's close to the actual holiday. Cosplaying as a Halloween version of your character is optional, but it is a requirement to enter the Miss Hetalia Day Pageant.
Question: What does the park look like?Answer: A good samaritan of the cosplay.com community named squkyshoes was kind enough to take time out her busy schedule to make a map of our location. You can check it out here: http://www.cosplay.com/journal/8193/
